News Editor

The News Editor gathers and compiles news from a variety of outlets, including our television news partners, the Internet, wire services as well as traditional news sources for publishing on the Web site, with an emphasis on delivering breaking news accurately. The news editor works with Web site manager and KSAT personnel to create, suggest and execute ideas for TV convergence packages.

The emphasis in this position is on writing and editing stories for the site. This is not a web-design position or a technical position, but requires a strong journalism background and an appetite for writing and reporting the news.

Requirements:

  • Accurate stories: May require double checking necessary facts in assigned projects
  • Edited text goes through necessary reviews
  • Check art/text consistency for assigned projects
  • Proofread all text in assigned projects
  • Provide editing and writing support to other teams as needed
  • Participate in editing team activities and support editing team goals
  • Work with project teams to create and maintain own schedule
  • Must have knowledge of editing and AP stylebook standards. A writing/editing test will be given.
  • Work in a team setting with broadcast partners under tight deadlines
  • Deliver integrated compelling news stories quickly and accurately, using sound news judgment to prioritize, work independently, and manage simultaneous assignments within an intense deadline-driven environment
  • Effectively use strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Promote the organization agressively and work effectively with all levels of management and staff
  • Convey complex subject matter clearly and engagingly
  • Work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Work with Web editing tools and catch spelling errors without electronic assistance (on hard copy)
  • Flexible with schedule and adaptable to constant change.
  • Effectively handle multiple tasks and frequent interruptions.
  • Work with a positive attitude
  • Work well in a multitasking environment paying close attention to details

Education/Skills:

  • Four-year college degree; publishing, communications, English, journalism, or related coursework
  • AP style experience
  • Established journalistic track record
  • Proven work experience with a TV station or newspaper
