How It Works: Carbohydrate Addict's Diet

Carb AddictsThe Carbohydrate Addict's Diet rests on the idea that you could be physically addicted to carbohydrates and therefore cannot control your eating. According to the authors, Dr. Rachael F. and Dr. Richard F. Heller, a carb-addict's body physically produces more insulin than the typical body when eating carbohydrates. That excess insulin keeps the brain from feeling satisfied or full.

The Hellers say carb addicts could eat an entire meal soon after finishing the first.

The Carb Addict's Diet is designed to limit insulin production to reduce overeating and lower the body's tendency to store excess calories in fat cells while making it better able to break down fat.

The Hellers developed a Carbohydrate Addict's Test to determine if you are a carb addict.

Although carbohydrates are the "evil" in this diet, the authors do not cut all carbohydrates. Instead, five diet plans limit the number of meals with carbohydrates (typically one) and limit the time for eating that meal. The plans each contain combinations of Complementary Meals (more restricted) and Reward Meals (anything you want until you're full). Each week, you follow one of the eating plans based on the amount of weight you have lost and the amount you want to lose.

The goal of the diet is permanent weight loss. Although you're asked to closely monitor your weight, no weighing or measuring of food is involved, and you need not give up any foods.
