Movie Rental Recommendations -- U
Ulee's Gold
About 10 minutes into this movie I couldn't believe Peter Fonda was nominated as Best Actor for this one. He said little, moved slowly and sounded like he was reading from a cue card. When it was over, I couldn't believe he didn't win. He says very, very little -- speaks in short, clipped sentences and says nothing about himself -- yet when the story plays itself out you feel you know the guy, intimately. The story is great, by the way, and when you think you know what's going to happen, it doesn't. You really like this quiet guy who sheltered himself from the world when it is all over. A top five movie from 1997.

The Usual Suspects
This movie is worth seeing twice, if only to piece all the clues together or to confirm your suspicions. Kevin Spacey is outstanding. His brilliant and diverse performance may be equal to his performance in "American Beauty". If you like a good suspense film, this one will not disappoint you.

U.S. Marshals
A less than equal sequel. But, then again, we are talking about a follow-up to "The Fugitive," that stellar action movie starring Harrison Ford with a best supporting actor Oscar to Tommy Lee Jones. Jones reprises his crusty U.S. Marshal character here, this time chasing a fugitive played by Wesley Snipes. But this flick focuses more on Jones and his character and less on the hunt. A mistake. There's also a story line that seems thrown in to offer a poignant moment for Jones' character. There is an opening scene on an airplane carrying prisoners reminiscent of the famous bus scene in "The Fugitive," bit it's not enough. Rent it for a weekend daytime showing or wait until is shows up on cable.
