Trick

Thanks to some high-energy trailers and a burning curiosity to see Tori Spelling attempt to act outside her father's realm, I went to see this flick hoping I'd like it. And I loved it. This story about two men looking for a place to consummate their one night stand was unexpectedly sweet without being sentimental. And it was much funnier and better written than I had anticipated. Oh, and Tori -- as an overzealous aspiring actress -- was actually good. Who knew?

Trigger Effect
I read the cover and saw Elisabeth Shue and couple of other actors and thought it sounded like a good flick. But the movie is very predictable as the plot follows a "trigger effect" and the action never really takes off. Definitely a dark movie . . . wait to catch it on HBO some late night when you're stuck with insomnia.

The Truman Show

Maybe it's me, but I didn't think this movie was all
that. Jim Carrey was good, the premise was interesting, and the film was well executed. But don't believe the hype. Maybe I'm jaded, but the idea of some dude being raised on television unbeknown to him just didn't float my boat enough to agree with the "best picture of the year" labels. I did, however, find a lot of clues in the movies as to how to live life to the fullest, and walked away with a real hankering for some Ovaltine.

A fascinating story idea that raises interesting questions about the direction television programming just might be headed in the near future. Jim Carrey takes on his first serious role, and executes it masterfully. The problem was that the movie became over-dramatic, more than the story warranted. It wasn't worth the $8 at a movie theater, but it's definitely entertaining enough to warrant renting on video.

Turbulence
I didn't have high hopes for this one when I started watching it on a cable movie channel. And I was right. Ray Liotta does his best -- and he provides the most interesting character -- but he's boxed inside this predictable, unbelievable story that only Hollywood can come up with. Wait for it to show up on television. At least don't pay money to rent it.
