(CNN) -

He may be handsome, but "American Idol" winner Phillip Phillips says he doesn't want to be a sex symbol.

In fact, the guitar-playing Georgia native is so gun-shy about the label, he told People Magazine, "If a girl [voted] for me because I'm cute, and then gets mad that I have a girlfriend, then she doesn't really like the music. I'm not some cute guy who is trying to be successful off that," he said. "I really want the music to come first."

Ryan Seacrest reportedly outed the love birds a few weeks back, though the identity of the 21-year-old's lady love remains a mystery.

Phillips' undying loyalty to his girlfriend has a lot to do with how supportive she's been these past few months, he says.

"She is so excited for me," he said. "She supported me throughout all of this, and I love her to death."

"I'm hoping maybe she will be able to come on tour with me," he added. "It would be cool to have her there."

Phillips' mystery woman, who is reportedly studying to become a nurse, might even come in handy on the tour bus - the singer has battled kidney problems throughout the season.

"She has helped me out a lot through this," he said, adding, he plans to undergo surgery "pretty soon."

Phillips heads out on the road with the other top 12 "American Idol" contestants on July 6th.
